Rhodesia House Princess Street – Canada Life
Rhodesia House is a 19th Century former shipping warehouse. It is a Grade 2 Listed building and as such all works undertaken need to satisfy the heritage people. It is a popular city centre office building yet despite being fully let to predominantly media based clients the building did not have satisfactory DDA access - our brief was to remedy this.
We started by removing internal kitchens and widening the internal space, removal of old stone steps and lowering the floor making use of the car park below, new structural steelwork was introduced and new flooring installed. The age and heritage of the building meant the timbers were substantial in size and all works had to be sympathetic to the existing fabric. We provided a new glass and steel staircase and DDA compliant platform lift.
New timber entrance doors were provided keeping to the style and heritage of the existing façade. The area was an existing fire escape and consideration needed to be given at all times to the egress from the building in case of fires so H & S was an important factor.
We also gave them back the facility to make a cup of tea and the Building Manger an office.
